We can see peak months whenever we release a new version of API-Guide; this is because we send an email to everyone in our mailing list when this happens.
The drops are often caused by hosting problems. We've often changed servers and this frequently resulted in a loss of visitors.
The above graph shows the cumulative number of visitors. as you can see, it took us 38 months to reach one million visitors, and only 7 more months to reach two million visitors.
